Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will dissolve parliament's lower house on Thursday for a snap election,... seeking a mandate to stick to his tough stance towards North Korea and rebalance the social security system.
Ro Aram has the details.

It seems the Japanese prime minister is taking advantage of his rebounding approval ratings,... as well as the disarray in the opposition camp.
He has been dogged by influence-peddling scandals and unpopular policies, but his ratings have recovered to above 50 percent after slumping below 30 in July.
He rejects claims that the call for a snap election is to shift attention away from allegations of cronyism.
Abe says he wants to seek a new mandate for his agenda, which includes an appraisal of his social security spending plans and his handling of the crisis on the Korean peninsula.
He didn't set a date, but the election is widely expected to be on October 22nd.
He also rejected criticism that holding an election now would create a political vacuum at a time of rising tensions with North Korea.

"In a national crisis with a shrinking and aging population, as well as a tense situation with North Korea, I'd like to stand on the frontline and exercise strong leadership to deal with this national crisis."

Abe is pushing for a controversial amendment to his country's pacifist Constitution, to state the formal recognition of Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
Meanwhile, the prime minister also announced a two trillion-yen stimulus package to focus on social spending and to encourage corporate investment.
He also said he would redirect some revenue from a planned consumption tax hike in 2019 to child care and education rather than paying back public debt, although he added he would not abandon fiscal reform.
