Today we are going back to the Western edge of the Sacramento Basin. The basin was studied for gas and oil potential. During that study, the lower slopes of the Diablo Range were also studied.
This area is the Black Diamond Mines Preserve. The middle eocene ephoch left layers that resulted in different types of sedimentary rock.

The geology of Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve features a display of sedimentary rocks including coal and silica-rich sandstone, deposited by ancient marine and estuarine environments during the Oligocene-Eocene epochs.

The Great Forces of Nature made the upper brown sandstone member but the Great Talents of People made the drawings in the Sandstone.
What will be next?

The members and formations that we can see today include those that were formed through cycles of marine deposition and tectonic uplift during the middle Eocene. These rocks represent have been named, Domengine Formation. The Domengine Formation also contains fossils and evidence of shallow-water conditions.
The preserve's landscape is shaped by these formations evident in the steep sandstone hills and the underlying strata that once formed a vast marine basin.

The collision of the North American and Pacific plates created uplift and controlled sea levels, leading to cycles of marine sediment deposition.
