(20 Mar 2019) The renowned play 'Jinnay Lahore Nahin Vekhya' was performed by the Tehrik-e-Niswan group on Tuesday (19 MARCH 2019) during the NAPA International Performing Art Festival 2019 Karachi, Pakistan.
The play set in Lahore, is set in 1947 immediately after the partition where a mass-migration of Hindus and Muslims took place.
The play, warmly received by the NAPA audience, is about immigrant family that's been allotted a haveli, a big mansion that's been abandoned by a Hindu family, after having spent many torturous months refugee camps.
The family looks forward settling down in their new home and starting life a anew, but to their dismay, they find that the haveli is not totally abandoned as an old Hindu woman, the mother of Ratan Lal, still living there.
On the other hand, the old Hindu woman also irks some local hooligans, who believe that Pakistan – a newly country carved out from India—now belongs only to Muslims, and no infidel has any right to remain here. However, it is rejected by the poet Nasir Kazmi, and the local prayer leader of the mosque. Finally, when the old woman dies, a debate ensues in the community over the issue of the performance of her last rites
The play was directed by Melbourne-based creative and performing artist Joshinder Chaggar. Among the other performers were Jaya Karan and Parvyn Singh Bennett. The performance titled 'Devi – Goddess' is an exploration of the Sufi saying. The three artists with three very different forms of expression presented experimental movement, Bharatnatyam dance, live vocals and music.
