The full form of GI is Geographical Indication, which is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods ( Registration and Protection) Act 1999 in India.

Some products which got GI Tags are Mysore silk of Karnataka, Phulkari of Punjab, Chanderi Sarees of Madhya Pradesh, Chikan Craft of Lucknow, Pokkali Rice -Kerala, Thanjavur Paintings -Tamil Nadu, Tirupathi laddu - Andhra Pradesh, Odisha Rasagola, Alphonso Mango - Maharashtra, Mizo Puanchei - Mizoram, Kadaknath Chicken - Madhya Pradesh, Khola Chilli - Goa, Chakhao - Manipur Black Rice, Gorakhpur Terracotta - Uttar Pradesh, Kashmir Saffron - J&K, Kolhapuri chappals - Maharashtra, Banaras Brocades and Sarees - UP.

Brief History : -

In 1994, when negotiations on the WTO TRIPS agreement were concluded, governments of all WTO member countries (164 countries, as of August 2016) had agreed to set certain basic standards for the protection of GIs in all member countries.

In December 1999, the Indian Parliament had passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,1999. This Act seeks to provide for the registration and better protection of geographical indications relating to goods in India. The Act has come into force with effect from 15th September 2003.

The Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks- who is the Registrar of Geographical Indications. The Geographical Indications Registry is located in Chennai.

FYI :
The registration of a geographical indication is valid for a period of 10 years. It can be renewed from time to time for a further period of 10 years each.

Latest GI Tags 2021 : ( as of 19/06/21 )

-The Jammu and Kashmir Government recently sought GI tag for Gucchi mushroom. The Gucchi mushrooms are highly expensive and are full of health benefits. 500 grams of Gucchi mushrooms cost Rs 18,000. Recently, GI Tag was provided to Saffron of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jalgaon Banana is Geographical Indications (GI) certified agricultural produce from the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. “Jalgaon Banana” was exported to Dubai on June 16, 2021, marking a major boost to exports.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, (APEDA) in collaboration with the Bihar government, Indian High Commission & Invest India, exported Jardalu mangoes to the United Kingdom.

In January 2021, Pakistan received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its Basmati rice under its Geographical Indications Act 2020. Pakistan is fighting a case in the European Union (EU) against India’s move to get Basmati Rice as its product.

Joynagarer Moa is made with a rare variety of puffed rice (kankachurkhoi) and date palm jaggery. The name of sweet gets comes from Joynagar in the South 24 Parganas district ( Area where it is made ) The first batch of Joynagarer moa was exported for the first time to Bahrain in January 2021.
