Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre, Ararat VICTORIA

Gum San tells the story about the arduous journey that many Chinese miners took from Southern China to Robe in South Australia and then their subsequent trek across Victoria to Ararat. They were on their way to the gold fields further east but happened upon one of the richest shallow alluvial goldfields.
This discovery by these Chinese prospectors in 1957 was significant in the establishment of Ararat as a town.

The building design follows the Chinese design philosophy of feng shui and reflects Southern Chinese architecture. The roof tiles were a present from Ararat's sister city, Taishan, Southern China. Four tradesmen from this city took four months to tile the roof in the traditional Chinese style.

Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre is located at 31 Lambert Street (Western Highway) Ararat.
It is open Thursday to Sunday (and Public Holidays) from 10am to 3pm.
