Yeah, we're near the end of the game, but this is only the second of four courses on Baroonda. It is one of the toughest courses yet, and personally I feel it's one of the hardest in the entire game, but it seems like the Baroonda government likes its racetracks brutal and dangerous, and consequently, they're all concentrated around the second half of the game.
Malastare's courses are short and relatively featureless, but Baroonda's is its opposite: They have the longest average lap times of any planet, and it's one of the few Star Wars planets to show many different biomes on one planet. They're also focused less on speed and more on survival. You may remember the unforgiving nature of Baroo Coast, the first course set on Baroonda. Grabvine Gateway goes into the swamps, with the racing machines hovering over water, maneuvering between tree trunks and roots. It's easy to get lost in this area because there isn't a clear sign of where to go next besides looking at the map. It's very wide open, with lots of vegetation in the way that interferes with your vision. Not to mention the series of sharp switchback turns before and after the swamp, particularly in the small rocky sandy area whose difficulty is apparently just from looking at its path.
If you're wondering about the quaking in that rocky sandy area, that's the shortcut opening up, but it can't be accessed normally. A later Baroonda racetrack passes by this area again, and it becomes accessible then.
I had to use "Bullseye" Navior for this one as he has the best handling in the game, at the cost of low durability and repair, as I can't handle Grabvine Gateway's turns as anyone else. I wouldn't pass muster in F-Zero, where you're out if you blow up even once. (The name of this racetrack sounds like a Donkey Kong Country stage.)
For some reason, the track favorite of this course is...Anakin Skywalker. As of the events of Episode I, Anakin won the Boonta Eve Classic without having ever left Tatooine, so it feels odd that he'd be the champion of a racetrack on a planet that, as far as Star Wars movie canon goes, doesn't even exist. However, we do see posters of Anakin around some of the other locations, suggesting that by now, he's become a podracing celebity himself, and in turn suggesting this game takes place after Episode I but before Episode II. Indeed, the comics and novels set between I and II do show that Anakin continues to do podracing on the side as he trains as a Jedi, and this time, he's able to travel around the galaxy. Under these circumstances, I could see him being the racer to beat in a few locations here and there, especially since he tends to play the hero, retaliating only if someone else tries to eliminate him first while defending others from assaults. How well he's known for these maneuvers, however, I have no clue.
