Kateel Temple Story
Long time ago there lived a demon called Arunasura. He obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he would not meet death by any god, any human or any two or four legged animals. This boon stays in effect as long as he kept on chanting Gayathri Mantra, a holy chant initiated to him by Goddess Saraswathi. Arunasura then became all powerful and started ruling the entire universe.

After acquiring the boon, Arunasura went to heaven, drove away devas and settled in devaloka. Lord Varuna, the rain God was also one amongst those driven out of devaloka. Because of this there was severe drought on the earth and people began to die of starvation.

Meanwhile Maharishi Jabali decided to perform a Yagna to relieve people of their suffering. When divine cow Nandini refused his request for help, he cursed her to be born as a river on the earth. Divine Nandini realized her mistake and ran to Goddess Shakthi pleading for mercy. Mother Goddess promised Nandini that she will manifest herself on the earth at an appropriate time and free her of the curse. Satisfied by the assurance, Nandini emerged as a river from Kanakagiri and ran on the earth to turn it green once again.

By seeing this, Asura Arunasura was furious and decided to destroy everything again. The trinities sought the help of Goddess Parvathi to eliminate him. She sent Lord Brahaspati to make Arunasura stop chanting the Gayathri Mantra. Lord Brahaspati successfully flatters Arunasura and makes him stop the chanting thereby making him vulnerable again.

Now Arunasura vainly felt that he was more than God himself. Mother Goddess took the shape of a charming woman and began to wander in the garden of Arunasura. When he tried to take her by storm, she disappeared inside a rock. Arunasura broke the rock with his sword. Suddenly, a vast swarm of bees emerged from the rock and stung him. Devi had taken the form of a big, furious bee that is 'Bhramari' and stung him repeatedly till his last breath.

After Arunasura’s death, the Devas and the sages led by Jabali performed "Abhishekham" to the Mother Goddess with tender coconuts and prayed her to calm down and bless the world.
The Mother incarnated herself as Durga Parameshwari in the form of a linga in the middle of the river Nandini. And Nandini was redeemed from her curse. The resulting temple is known as Kateel Shree Durga Parameshwari temple. River Nandini was rewarded with the privilege of washing the Mother's feet forever!

Kati means waist and iLa means earth. The mother goddess emerged from the earth showing her body above the waist in the form a linga. The place came to be called as Katila and with passage of time it came to be known as Kateel. Durga Parameshwari is here for the good of the universe and fulfils the desires of those who come to worship her.
