Teeth grinding problems: Teeth grinding is a condition called Bruxism.
It is not completely understood what causes bruxism. Some possible physical or psychological causes may include:
Stress, anxiety or tension, Suppressing anger or frustration, Competitive, aggressive, or hyperactive personality, Pain from an earache or teething in young children, Incorrect alignment of upper and lower teeth, Other types of sleep problems, Other medical disorders, such as Huntington's disease or Parkinson's disease, Although not very common, side effects of psychiatric medications, including certain antidepressants can cause bruxism.
Although there are different theories regarding the cause of bruxism, daily stress is thought to be the trigger in many people.
Some people clench their teeth and never feel any negative effects from it. Other people face serious complications from teeth grinding.
Some of the other symptoms bruxism my cause include depression, anxiety and tension, eating disorders, headaches, earaches, sensitivity in teeth, jaw pain or soreness and insomnia.
When teeth grinding or bruxism results in pain or other problems, it is usually due to a mixture of the contributing factors, such as stress, amount of pressure of the clenching and grinding, whether the teeth are properly aligned, diet, sleeping habits and even posture.
Upon diagnosis with bruxism, there are several possible treatments to reduce the pain, prevent permanent tooth damage, and reduce clenching as much as possible. Mouth guards and other appliances called splints can be used to treat teeth grinding, to protect the teeth from clenching pressure and prevent damage to the teeth.
