About this video: So what is the difference between PNG and JPEG formats? Well, the main difference between these two images formats is their compression algorithms. JPG uses a lossy compression format. That means that it gets rid of some of the image information in order to reduce the size of the file. This also means that there is a bit of quality decrease when you use JPEG.

On the other hand, PNG uses a Lossless compression format. This means you won't lose any image information, but the file size will typically be larger. This isn’t always the case, but for images take with a camera, it’s pretty much always true.

So that’s the basics of these formats, but when should you use a JPEG and when should you use a PNG? Well, JPG is used mostly in photos. This is because photos tend to have smoother transitions between colors and tones. JPG also provides excellent compression with little or no loss in the perceived image quality; reducing the size to a tenth of the size you would get if you use lossless compression like PNG does. One final note about JPG is that it has the ability to embed EXIF.

EXIF contains the information that is related to the image like when or where it was captured, color profiles, and the like. This information can be very helpful to the photographer when browsing through or editing their images. PNG doesn't retain this information.

With PNG though, it is used mostly when creating or altering images like logos, graphics, cartoons, single color images etc. For example, a background image that contains a single color can be compressed by PNG into a very small size because the content of the pixel is identical. PNG also allows for transparent background, and JPG doesn't.

Overall, JPG is great for photography while PNG is great for graphic design and digital image creation.

With that being said, I hope you enjoyed this video. If you did, please give the videos thumbs up and be sure to subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already. It really helps us out, and it means a lot. Thank you very much in advance!
