Scientists would really like to drill a five-kilometer-deep hole on the moon. By going deep into lunar rock, we could determine whether protons can decay into something else – in that case, physics theories would be unified.

A group of physicists has claimed that drilling a 5-kilometre-deep hole in the moon could finally provide evidence that protons can fall apart. Finding this hitherto unseen behaviour would support attempts to unite incompatible physics theories.

Proton, the most stable particle according to our current best theory of how the forces and particles of nature interact (the standard model of particle physics), is said to lead an eternal life. The model has some deficiencies such as its failure to merge quantum mechanics with Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity which explains gravity. However, unlike them some proposed unified theories state that protons might decay into other particles but this happens rarely.

This means that if any proton decay were found then these more complete models may be right while experiments on Earth have failed to see this happen.
