Six candidates vying to become Iran's next president, faced off in the first televised debate, presenting their plans on how best to revive the economy. The contenders laid out their economic platforms, offering a range of proposals aimed at addressing high inflation, sanctions, investment, and other economic issues and challenges. It was the first of five debates planned before June 28 presidential election. The elections were called to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash on May 19. Five of the candidates are hard-liners while the sixth candidate, lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian, 69, is a heart surgeon who has the support of some pro-reformers.
The election comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, its arming of Russia in that country’s war on Ukraine and its wide-reaching crackdowns on dissent.
