A 5-judge bench of the Supreme Court Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of section 6A of the Citizenship Act that granted citizenship to immigrants who entered Assam before 1 January, 1966. In doing so the top court declared that section 6A aligned with the concept of fraternity and was introduced out of humanitarian concern.
