Araidne's Tale

Queen Pasiphae of Crete mated with a bull sent by Zeus, and gave birth to the Minotaur, a creature half man – half bull. Her husband King Minos hid the monster in the Labyrinth constructed by Daedalus at the Minoan Palace of Knossos. King Minos would imprison his enemies in the Labyrinth, which was such a complicated maze that no one ever escaped, so the Minotaur could devour them.

Androgeus, the son of King Minos, went to Athens to compete in the Panathenaic Games, and was killed during the Marathon by the bull that had impregnated his mother Queen Pasiphae. Minos was infuriated, and demanded Aegeus the king of Athens send sacrificial victims to the Minotaur to advert the plague caused by the death of Androgeus.

Theseus, son of King Aegeus, volunteered to go to Crete in the guise of a sacrificial victim, in order to kill the Minotaur. Theseus promised his father that he would hoist white sails upon his return from Crete, indicating he was coming back alive. Otherwise the boat would return with black sails if Theseus was killed.

Arriving in Crete, Theseus announced his real intention to King Minos, but Minos was confident that even if Theseus did manage to kill the Minotaur, he would never be able to escape the Labyrinth.

The Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, fell madly in love with Theseus, and decided to help him. She gave him a thread and told him to unravel it as he penetrated deeper and deeper into the Labyrinth, so that he could retrace his steps and escape after slaying the monster.

Theseus killed the Minotaur, and with Ariadne’s thread he managed to retrace his way out of the Labyrinth.

The lovers Theseus and the Princess Ariadne then departed to sail triumphantly back to Athens, and they stopped mid-voyage at Naxos where there was a celebration dedicated to them. After long hours of feasting and drinking, Ariadne fell asleep on the shore and failed to reboard the boat to Athens. When Theseus realised he had left Ariadne behind he was so upset that he forgot his promise to his father and did not change the sails from black to white. When his father King Aegeus saw the black sails from afar, believing his son was dead, he threw himself into the waters to drown, and thus the sea is called the Aegean Sea.

In some versions Theseus deliberately left Ariadne on Naxos, abandoning the half-sister of the Minotaur as she slept.

Then the god of wine, pleasure, and ecstacy Dionysos discovered the beautiful Araiadne and made her his wife. In some versions she is later slain by the hunter goddess Artemis, in others she ascends with Dionysus to Olympos as an immortal.

In another version of Ariadne's tale, her marriage with Dionysos occured several generations earlier when he was still roaming the earth spreading his cult. During Dionysus' war against Argives Ariadne was slain or turned to stone by King Perseus, and Dionysus descended into the underworld and brought her back with him to Olympos.

In Greek iconography the immortal Ariadne is often depicted alongside her husband Dionysos feasting with the gods of Olympos, and in Bacchic scenes surrounded by dancing satyrs and maenads.
