The Tramontano castle is located on a hill, called Lapillo hill, overlooking the historic center of the city of Matera. Aragonese style , the castle, with a central male and two lower side towers, one and the other round, scalloped and equipped with loopholes, was built starting from 1501 by Count Giovan Carlo Tramontano , feudal lord of Matera. The new king of Naples, Ferdinand II , had promised to the Materans to no longer surrender the city to any feudal lord, after it had already been liberated several times from the feudal yoke by paying several ransoms to remain free city to autonomous regiment, ie directly dependent on the Royal crown. Instead the count Tramontano, which boasted credits to the Royal Treasury, asked and obtained the county of Matera in 1496.

The count soon became unpopular to the materani as with the passage of time he was filled with debts, to cope with which he taxed the population with heavy taxes. Thus began the construction of the castle, which was located on a hill overlooking the city, outside the city walls, with the aim of "feudal" control of the surrounding land rather than defense of the city itself. It seems that then the building should have included other defense towers, one of which was found under the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto of Matera along with other hypogeal environments. For the construction of the castle were spent as many as 25,000 ducats and this weighed even more on the population.

So it was that some citizens, tired of the continuous abuses, gathered together behind a rock, which has since been called u pizzon 'du mal consigghj , that is "the stone of bad advice", and organized the murder of the "tyrant" Tramontano. On December 29, 1514, the count, just out of the cathedral, was assassinated in a side street of the same, which was later eloquently called "Via della Riscatto". The castle therefore remained unfinished. Since 2008, it is interested, together with the surrounding park, by restoration works still under way. Some of these interventions are aimed at the recovery of the moat with the restoration of the tufaceous walls.
