I am a dentist and I have sleep apnea. I was not diagnosed until I became aware of a subtle variety of sleep apnea called "upper airway resistance syndrome" which is a very nuanced condition. I learned about this when I was going through the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) program after being a practicing dentist for over 20 years (still practicing!). I was in denial about having a problem until I saw many of the symptoms in myself and I approached my doctor about having a sleep study. Unfortunately I had been suffering for years and I feel so thankful that I was able to help myself obtain a diagnosis and even treatment.

Unfortunately there is stereotype of what a person with sleep apnea looks like. I want to raise awareness that sleep apnea can happen to young or old, thin or overweight, male or female. This is the only way to allow an early diagnosis and early treatment to potentially prevent that the disease progresses to a major or fatal event such as heart attack or stroke.

I want to pass on the knowledge I have gained by my oral appliance therapy and dental sleep medicine studies by passing it on to others with this video series that I have compiled. Oral Appliance therapy is not for everyone, neither is CPAP. I hope to give people hope and some education on other accepted therapies that may work.
