George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (June 25, 1963 – December 25, 2016) was a British singer, songwriter and record producer of Greek descent, considered one of the great artists of his generation and an icon of popular culture.

Michael rose to fame as a member of the duo Wham!, later embarking on a solo career. Born in East Finchley, London, Michael formed the duo with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981. The duo's first two albums, Fantastic (1983) and Make It Big (1984), reached number one on the UK Albums Chart in the UK. United States, and on the Billboard 200 in the United States. They then embarked on a world tour, landing in China in April 1985, the first visit by Western artists to the country, which led to widespread media coverage.

His first solo single, "Careless Whisper", charted at number one in over 20 countries. Michael released his solo album Faith in 1987, peaking at number one in the UK, staying at number one on the Billboard 200 for 12 weeks. The album sold 25 million copies worldwide and remains one of the best-selling albums in history. Four singles from the album, "Faith", "Father Figure", "One More Try" and "Monkey", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael became the best-selling artist of 1988 and Faith was awarded the Grammy for Album of the Year at the 31st Grammy Awards, 1989. His second solo album, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, was released in 1990 and again launched George Michael's name at number one with the singles "Praying for Time" and "Freedom! '90".
