First a lot of people want to talk about pathology, we arent going to talk about it today however because in most cases if you have a pathology we would have evaluated and sent to the proper office for treatment of that. However, if you have mechanical back or neck pain that means that things arent moving quite correctly. This is what I treat as a chiropractor and a physical therapists and massage therapists actually work as well with this kind of problem. Next we are going to talk about the more important conditions or a herniated disc, degenerative disc and even spinal stenosis.

When we talk about a disc , it is a shock absorber in the spine. The way the disc is put together the inner portion of this is a jelly like watery type of the substances called the nucleus pulposus and the outer portion of the disc is actually called the annulas fibrosis. It is a cartilage type of structure and it works a lot like a water balloon. If we had a water ballon sitting on the edge of the table we would see the two sides pushing out in all directions and if we pushed on the top of the balloon it would expand in all directions and when we let it go it goes back to normal. When we talk about a herniated disc, a herniated disc takes place when the jelly like substance is put under a great deal of pressure the cartilage around it tears and cause a little portion of the disc to bulge out. This wear and tear allows the disc or the cartilage structure to push against the nerve, which will not allow the proper information to get from the brain to the rest of the body. This is shown in a University Colorado study back in the mid-90s, where 10 mm Mercury pressure on the on a nerve, (which is about the pressure of a dime) will reduce the effective functionality of a nerve about 60%! That's not very much pressure.

When treating these types of problems in my office, we talk about a special type of treatment here in just a second that is called spinal decompression, utilizing the DRS protocol. With the patients that we see in many cases they are taking steroids and other anti-inflammatory or addictive medications. They may have had some addictive narcotics or antidepressants for treatment and physical therapy or epidural injections, even failed back surgery. Some may have been treated with a spinal cord stimulator or even a disc replacement surgery! The DRS protocol is decompression reduction and stabilization in the spine. What we are doing here is pulling the disc level apart which allows us to bring and oxygen water and nutrients back into the disc. That allows the disc to heal, really from the inside out. Next we have a before and after MRI. In the before treatment MRI on the left, you can see a little light area. You can also see a dark black mass coming out of one of the discs filling the intervertebral canal. That is a part of the disc. This is the intervertebral canal, and the spinal cord goes in the vertebral body. The after MRI we can see that there isn't the disc pushing out, it is circled on both of those images, see that looks all better.
