Aquaponics, Alum and Agriculture (ETC) - April 20, 2022

Mount Royal University alumni Rudi Schiebel and Paul Shumlich discuss how aquaponics technology is transforming sustainable farming and food security, plus how experiences at MRU have shaped their careers.

As the CEO and founder of Habitat Life Sciences, Rudi Schiebel is creating a smart-farming brand that reflects his belief that the relationship between agriculture and the natural environment is a partnership, not an entitlement. Habitat’s pilot farm in Chase BC is the first facility of its kind to be certified organic under the Canadian Aquaculture Standard, producing organic coho salmon and organic craft cannabis together in Habitat’s proprietary aquaponics process. This process recirculates 99.7% of its water and converts solid waste from the salmon farm into a water-based fertilizer for cannabis plants.
