Can sound travel in space? This short explains how sound works, why vibrations need a medium like air or water to travel through, and why the vacuum of space makes sound impossible to hear.

Sound is just a vibration that's moving through stuff like air or water. If you take away that medium, then the sound can't propagate. Think about the classic bell jar experiment. As you pump the air out of the jar, the bell seems to get quieter and quieter until all of the air is gone and you no longer can hear the bell despite the fact that it's still moving inside of the jar. That's basically what happens in space. There's not really any medium for the sound to travel through. There's no air, and so the soundwaves have nothing to push through. So for astronauts, they wouldn't be able to speak to each other out in space if it weren't for spacesuits with radios inside. But light is different, it doesn't need a medium to propagate.
