Did the disciples REALLY see Jesus after He died?

We’re on minimal fact #3: The Disciples Believed.

The overwhelming majority of scholars agree that people sincerely believed that they saw the risen Lord.

All four Gospels and the Book of Acts document the resurrection.

We also find early faith statements in the New Testament church, such as 1 Corinthians 15:3-7, that include the resurrection.

And many early church fathers also record the apostle’s teachings about it.

But here’s what gives these testimonies so much credence.

Many of the disciples died for their witness, and many others were willing to die.

Now some critics will say, “People die for their beliefs all the time!”

But hold on.

There’s a difference between dying for what you believe is true, and dying for what you know is false.

Liars make poor martyrs.

Eyewitnesses who are willing to die for what they know is true creates a much stronger case than belief alone.

Now, just because they died for what they claimed was true does not necessarily make it true,

But it means they sincerely believed it was.

Paul is another special example.

He was a strong persecutor of Christians and the New Testament church.

He put Christians in prison, which likely led to many of their deaths.

But then something happened.

While on the road to Damascus, Jesus appeared to him, and he was forever converted to the gospel.

People typically don’t make such a drastic life change in an instant where they begin doing the exact opposite of what they were doing before.

So Paul must have sincerely believed that Jesus appeared to him,

because he became an apostle of Jesus Christ and preached the gospel message far and wide.

His life ultimately came to an end when he was beheaded in Rome.

It’s pretty clear from the historical record that many, if not all of the disciples believed they saw the risen Jesus.
