Puchberg am Schneeberg is a town in the south-eastern part of Lower Austria with approximately 2650 inhabitants. It is situated about 80 Kilometres from Vienna. The highest point of Puchberg is the Schneeberg with 2076 m, the highest mountain of Lower Austria.

About its early history, little is known. A Roman road, on which grains, wine and salt were transported, passed through the area. The name Puchberg was first mentioned in 1260 in reference to Eberhard von Puchperch.[3] In the Middle Ages four castles were built near Puchberg, including Puchberg Castle, of which only ruins remain.
The village was destroyed in 1683 by Ottoman forces at the time of the Battle of Vienna. With the opening of the railway from Wiener Neustadt and the rack railway to the Schneeberg in 1897, tourism became important. The region became a resort area for the Viennese upper classes seeking to escape the city in summer, and it still serves as a nature retreat today.

The Schneebergbahn

In 1897, the cog railway steamed up the highest mountain in Lower Austria for the first time: the Schneeberg. Today, the modern tourism portal - the flagship of the Schneebergbahn - serves as the starting point for trips up the Schneeberg.
The modern Salamander train takes you to the Hochschneeberg mountain station at 1,800 m above sea level in just 40 minutes. It was built to be barrier-free and allows you to get on and off comfortably in any weather. In the summer months, the nostalgic steam train also runs on Sundays and public holidays. With it, you can climb the mountain just like Emperor Franz Joseph did over 100 years ago.
It is worth taking an enjoyable stop at the Baumgartner stop. There you can enjoy the delicious Schneebergbuchteln, which are a real treat for the palate. Once you reach the top, the full beauty of the surrounding mountains is presented in a paradise of views.
