Theodore Roosevelt believed that being a good leader required good character, and frequently broke down his idea of character into three core tenets: courage, honesty, and common sense. We will examine what each of those three things meant to him, and how this thinking informed some of his most consequential decisions, such as intervening in the Anthracite Coal Strike and discharging Black soldiers in the Brownsville Affair.
