A 2-Minute Assessment for Lymphatic Congestion in Horses

🎯 Purpose

The See-Touch-Assess test helps you identify areas of stagnant lymph and restrictions in the hide. By locating these congested spots, you’ll know where to focus when addressing lymphatic flow.

🔍 What to Look & Feel For

Normal Tissue: Soft, pliable, stretches easily

Restricted Tissue: Resistant, “stuck,” limited stretch → indicates lymphatic congestion

📌 How to Perform the Assessment

1️⃣ Start – Complete one side of the horse, then the other

2️⃣ Face –
• Divide in half
• Stretch hide in semi-circular motion from muzzle upward
• Work around eyes, ears, cheeks, jaw

3️⃣ Neck –
• Begin at the poll and work downward

4️⃣ Shoulders & Trunk –
• Assess shoulders, withers, upper back
• Stretch across trunk & lower abdomen

5️⃣ Rump & Hindquarters –
• Stretch and feel across the rump and hind end

6️⃣ Extremities (Legs) –
• Place one hand lateral, one hand medial (digital muscles)
• Stretch skin — it should extend to coronary band
• If resistance, gently continue until restriction length is clear
