2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 review in Malaysia - Side Splits Of Luxury

The i5 shouldn’t work, but here we are.

Instead of doing the ‘wise’ thing and giving their cars a dedicated platform to support battery-electric powertrains, BMW has stubbornly stuck to a single platform and therefore forked the G60 5 Series into both a BEV and ICE sub-series.

Usually, the EV version is left compromised - but this German brand is an exception, and the i5 proves exceptional. Somehow, Munich has had its cake and eaten it too, with the 5 Series’ agile and composed character dominating the drive as if it was made to be engine-less all along.

The eDrive40, with up to 340PS sent appropriately to the rear wheels, it is perhaps the most convincing balance if you’ve got a green itch to scratch, but don’t want to ditch the luxury sedan prestige and the occasional corner carving.
