Tense is a verb form that indicates when an action or state occurred, with the three main tenses being past, present, and future. These main tenses are further divided into four aspects: simple, continuous (or progressive), perfect, and perfect continuous, resulting in a total of twelve main tenses in English to express details about the duration and timing of events. 

The Three Main Tenses

Past Tense: Refers to actions or states that have already happened.

Example: She wrote a letter.

Present Tense: Refers to actions or states happening now.

Example: She writes a letter.

Future Tense: Refers to actions or states that will happen later.

Example: She will write a letter. 

The Four Aspects
Each main tense can be combined with four aspects to add more detail about the action: 

Simple:Indicates a general truth, a habitual action, or a completed action without specifying duration or continuity.

Example: She writes a letter (Simple Present). 

Continuous (or Progressive):Shows an action that was in progress or is ongoing at a specific time.

Example: She is writing a letter (Present Continuous). 

Perfect:Indicates an action that began in the past and has just finished or is completed with a connection to the present.
