The historic installation was built in the sixth century under the direction of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. 917-year-old Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians worship Hagia Sophia. It was the largest church in the world for almost a thousand years. In 1453, the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad conquered Istanbul and bought Hagia Sophia for personal gain.
He converted the Christian portraits of the church into mosques by covering them with verses from the Qur'an. Sultan Muhammad Fateh performed the first Friday prayers by hoisting the flag of Islam. Since then, the worshipers have been praying in this historic mosque for 471 years.
