Teleportation is the hypothetical transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them. In theory, it means scanning an object down to the subatomic level, annihilating it at point x, and then transmitting all the data to point y, where a supercomputer translates the data and builds the initial object back up from nothing, almost instantaneously. While human teleportation, for now, exists only in science fiction, teleportation is possible in the subatomic world of quantum mechanics – albeit not in the way typically depicted on TV. In the quantum world, teleportation involves the transportation of information, rather than the transportation of matter.
