There have been many places that almost became independent countries but didn’t quite make it. 🌍 Take New Atlantis, for example. 🏝️ In 1964, an American millionaire attempted to create a country by building a platform in the Caribbean. Then there’s West Papua. 🇮🇩 This region, currently part of Indonesia, has a long history of seeking independence. Before joining the U.S. in 1845, Texas was an independent nation known as the Republic of Texas. 🤠 Imagine a country in North America sitting between the U.S. and Mexico! 🌵 Let’s not forget Biafra in Nigeria, 🇳🇬 which declared independence in 1967. Or Scotland, 🏴 which almost became an independent nation in the 2014 referendum. And take a look at Catalonia. 🇪🇸 This region in northeastern Spain has long sought independence. In 2017, they held a referendum to break away from Spain and failed.
