The Kenmore models 1803 and 1703 have the same bobbin winder and clutch release and clutch button mechanism, which can be confusing. If the bobbin winder is engaged, the clutch automatically releases the machine, so the needle will not sew, while winding the bobbin. When your bobbin is full, though, even though the bobbin winder releases itself automatically, you must push the silver clutch button on the top of the machine, or you machine will run, but not sew.
