Made by Albert Jekste, "My Latvia" is a haunting film about the illegal Soviet military occupation of three Baltic States in the 1940's. Jekste's highly personal work details Soviet use of internal subversion and conquest, and Stalin and other Soviet leaders imprisoning or deporting those who resisted. Farms were forcibly collectivized. An extensive program to impose bilingualism was initiated. Minority schools were shut down. Jekste examines the criminal backgrounds of Latvian nationals put into powerful positions within the new government. He worked for the Republic of Latvia prior to the Soviet occupation. The film is presented by the United States Information Service (:09) and collected from the Silas Bronson library (:20) Albert Jekste (:51) opens explaining his role as photographer for the free Latvian government (:59). He explains the dangers surrounding capturing this footage (1:10). Latvia experienced the greatest influx of ethnic Russians of all-time leading to a wash of much of the Latvian culture and way of life. The countryside of Latvia unfolds (1:50) as Jekste sets the scene (2:01). Latvian government officials celebrate their independence in 1918 (2:32). Janis Cakste was awarded the first presidency in 1920 (2:38). Soldiers parade through Latvian streets (2:56). Starving Russian peasants await rail cars in 1921 (3:20). Russian youth chomp on food, the first refugees of the Bolshevik regime (3:28). The ‘Great Song Festival’ of 1926 is featured (3:38). The entire Latvia nation participated in this remarkable event. The president of Finland attends the celebration (3:51). Ships appear on the Baltic (4:34). Communist troops push through gates of Latvia and Estonia (4:48). Communist bases are sighted on a map (4:58). Russian headlines inform the public of a Soviet ultimatum in June of 1940 (5:28). A T-34 Soviet tank (5:36) arrives in Latvia. The Red Army marches (5:51). An image of Andrey Vyshinsky appears in the papers (6:03). He arrived in Teika, Riga to initiate the new order. Augusts Kirhensteins was appointed Prime Minister during the occupation (6:08). Political prisoners celebrate on June 21st as jails were opened (6:20). Released men were armed (6:26) as a new police force. Vyshinsky admires the Thanksgiving Parade (6:40). Johannes Undusk; the Second Secretary of the Communist Party (7:04) delivers Soviet demands to the Latvian Parliament (7:07). The NKVD carefully monitored the proceedings (7:18). In Estonia, an identical proceeding took place as Soviet troops supported the Communist appointed government (7:28). Kirhensteins waves from a rail car (7:37) as he leaves Riga. He drives through Moscow (7:53). Kirhenstein reads a speech for a Latvian delegation of communists (8:39). Stalin, Krushchev (8:57), Georgy Malenkov and Andrei Zhdanov (9:00) attended. On August 5th, 1940 Latvia became a part of the Soviet Union. Vyacheslav Molotov (9:10) applauds. Demonstrations greets Kirhenstein on his route home (9:17). Soviet troops stand guard in Latvia (9:29). Soviet flags wave over the country (9:33). A new constitution was delivered from Moscow (10:29). A series of convicts and crooks were appointed in government positions (10:36). Portraits of Soviet leaders including Stalin (11:50) were lacquered onto walls. Soviet flags are strung up over the city (11:56). Movies made in Moscow replaced traditional Latvian films (12:02). Moscow produced all radio and paper news. New books were printed (12:32). New plays were presented (12:43); all of which subversively altering Latvian culture. A newspaper clipping details the nationalization of banks (13:32). Personal assets were declared property of the state (13:42). Footage shows trained supervisors from Moscow conducting inventory (13:44). Personal bank accounts were confiscated (13:56). Workers were forced to lend pay to the state (14:13). Private farms broken up for distribution (14:23). 14,000 people shipped to Siberian slave labor camps or gulags in June of 1941 (15:02). Death sentences are plucked from the pockets of corpses (15:17). The NKVD headquarters in Riga (15:32). Basement cells (15:40) and a torture chamber are featured (15:48). 78 names were marked for execution (16:04). Bodies lay in a mass grave (16:13). Jekste helped identify the bodies. A fifth columnists face is twisted and mangled (16:46). Footage captures a funeral Jekste personally attended in Forest Cemetery outside Riga, July 6th 1941 (17:26). The End (18:18).
