Dance CoLab is an exciting stage dance competition in South Africa, brought to life by the brilliant minds of Quintus Jansen, Megan Erasmus, and Anuq Wilson. The name Dance CoLab combines the concepts of collaboration and experimentation (referred to as a "Lab") in dance, where performers explore and push their boundaries with their bodies and music. The inaugural event took place in October 2021, followed by successful editions in June 2022 and December 2022, in collaboration with Penny's Dance Academy & Great I Am dance schools.
This unique series showcases talented up-and-coming dance performers, both in solo acts and larger groups, representing a variety of dance styles. Dance CoLab aims to provide these performers with valuable stage dance experience before they venture into the world of dance competitions. Each performance is evaluated by a panel of judges, with scores awarded in percentages. The contestants have the opportunity to earn prestigious Platinum (highest score), Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards based on their outstanding performances.
The heart of Dance CoLab lies in creating a supportive environment for dancers to shine on stage. The competition format allows dancers to perform in front of an enthusiastic audience comprised of parents, friends, and family members who cheer them on with unwavering support, regardless of their affiliation.
In the spirit of fostering collaboration and resource-sharing, Dance CoLab actively encourages smaller dance studios to participate. By joining forces, these studios can combine their resources, creating an ideal platform for year-end showcases. The event operates on a revenue-split model, ensuring that participating studios also gain financial benefits.
The showcase competition concept embraces the idea of dancers entering multiple categories to maximize their stage time. This not only boosts their confidence but also provides them with invaluable experience that prepares them for the competitive dance world. Dancers are encouraged to participate in Street Dance Battles, as they offer a unique opportunity for personal expression through improvisation and adaptability.
The majority of participants have less than five competitions or showcases under their belts, making Dance CoLab an ideal platform to encourage and uplift them while fueling their passion for dance. This event also exposes them to other talented dancers and various dance styles, broadening their horizons.
Dancers are scored based on their age groups and levels, ensuring fairness and appropriate competition. The competition consists of three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Additionally, there are three Age Groups: Tiny Tots (7 years and under), 8-12 years, and 13+ years. Currently, over 80% of the entrants are under the age of 18 years, though the age ranges may become more defined in the future.
To further motivate the dancers, scores are not given below 60%. The scoring system includes Bronze (60-69%), Silver (70-79%), Gold (80-89%), and the prestigious Platinum (90% and above). The judges' comments and feedback are invaluable, as they guide the dancers and coaches in identifying areas for improvement.
Join us for an unforgettable celebration of talent, creativity, and the joy of dance!
