In 2003, developer Pat Hamill brought the Colorado Open back from the abyss after the state championship had been canceled due to fiscal mismanagement the day before it was supposed to begin. He turned around its fortunes and brought it to Green Valley Ranch Golf Course, where it has remained ever since—as have the Colorado Women's Open and Colorado Senior Open. The Colorado Open Golf Foundation administers all three, as well as First Tee Green Valley Ranch, which has impacted more than 40,000 kids at its learning center on the Green Valley Ranch campus. The Opens boast equal purses and first-place money—$250,000 and $100,000, respectively—for the men's and women's events. The amounts are the highest of any state open. Hamill's philanthropy is legendary. As co-chair of the Jack A. Vickers Invitational he generated millions for the Colorado Boys and Girls Clubs from 2008 to 2019, and his multiple-day Carmel Classic Invitational at Pebble Beach has generated $5.3 million for scores of charities in its first four years.
