On Oct. 11, 2022, the OPC hosted a book night with veteran business journalist and professor Christopher Roush to discuss his book, “The Future of Business Journalism.” In the book, he writes about the role of business news and how it has shifted from a source of information about financial decisions for small business owners, consumers, and employees to expensive subscription services aimed at executives. He argues that relationships between businesses and media have dissolved and left local coverage atrophied. OPC Past President Paula Dwyer served as moderator for the discussion.

In this clip, Roush talks about whether it’ss possible to bring local business coverage back from decline. He talks about a local paper in Charlotte, North Carolina that started as a small operation and out performs the city’s paper of record. He said specialized newsletters and other small scale operations have a role to play in filling the gap. He also talks about the need for more business journalism training at j-schools.
