A few weeks ago BAMS; the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society posted their most recent “Magnus Opus” on the State of the Climate for 2020.

I know that after 2020 ends it takes some time to collect all the data and analyze it; I am just glad that it is all put together before this year ends, since the changes in the climate are happening so fast we need almost real-time data and analysis publications, similar to what happens with climate attribution studies for so-called natural disasters that are in reality “unnatural disasters”.

In this video I chat about some of the key trends that are happening in the global climate system, looking at numerous plot (graph) trends.

Some of the key changes are:
— ozone hole over Arctic in March was deepest in record, exceeding even 2010 (stratospheric polar vortices strong at north poles in their respective winters)
— global surface temperature was 3rd overall; lower tropospheric temperature still strongly rising, while lower stratospheric temperature still falling (as expected with strong lower atmospheric warming)
— number of days globally with extreme warming increased sharply
— Arctic sea ice still trending downward sharply for both winter maximum and summer minimum (second lowest behind 2012)
— glacier melt trending sharply down, for 33rd consecutive year
— northern hemisphere snow cover extent sharply lower, but did not surpass 1990 minimum
— global cloudiness trending lower by about 5% since about 1980
— total column water vapour trending upwards over land and oceans (warmer so more evaporation); specific humidity over land and ocean trending upwards; relative humidity over land and ocean decreasing (extra water vapour increase in air less than increase in saturation point as air temperature rises)
— overall total global precipitation over land and water fluctuates a lot year to year but trend is pretty flat
— ocean heat content in 0-700 meter depth strongly increasing; global sea level rise strongly increasing (3.5 mm per year)
— tropospheric ozone (harmful air pollution) increasing
— etc…
