A woman wants to know if surrendering to God is the key to transmuting suffering in the world, and how that fits in with the message of Jesus on the cross.

Rupert says: ‘Jesus first resolved the issue of resistance within himself, and then he turned towards the world, sharing that understanding with the people who were torturing him. Because when he resolved the issue of resistance within himself, a transmutation took place – from sorrow to pure love.

‘Similarly, you’ve surrendered your struggle with sorrow, and you bear it in your heart. And the reason you can bear it is because your heart is big enough – not only for your personal sorrow, but also humanity’s sorrow. Just as your sorrow is ultimately not personal, your heart, whose nature is love, is also not personal. It is the heart of infinite being whose nature is love – and that is what you are.’
