Unitarian Christianity. By William Ellery Channing. Full Audiobook
Unitarian Christianity is a book written by William Ellery Channing in 1819. The book was written as a speech for the ordination of Rev. Jared Sparks in the First Independent Church of Baltimore. The speech was delivered on May 5, 1819, and was titled "Unitarian Christianity" .
The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, Channing explains the principles that Unitarians adopt in interpreting the Scriptures. He regards the Scriptures as the records of God's successive revelations to mankind, and particularly of the last and most perfect revelation of his will by Jesus Christ. Whatever doctrines seem to be clearly taught in the Scriptures, Unitarians receive without reserve or exception. They do not, however, attach equal importance to all the books in this collection. Their religion, they believe, lies chiefly in the New Testament. The dispensation of Moses, compared with that of Jesus, they consider as adapted to the childhood of the human race, a preparation for a nobler system, and chiefly useful now as serving to confirm and illustrate the Christian Scriptures. Jesus Christ is the only master of Christians, and whatever he taught, either during his personal ministry, or by his inspired Apostles, Unitarians regard as of divine authority, and profess to make the rule of their lives .
In the second part of the book, Channing discusses some of the doctrines which the Scriptures, so interpreted, seem to Unitarians clearly to express. He discusses the nature of God, the character of Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Atonement, and the future life. Channing argues that God is one, and that he is a being of infinite wisdom, power, and goodness. He believes that Jesus Christ is not God, but a human being, who was endowed with extraordinary powers and virtues by God. He argues that the Holy Spirit is not a distinct person, but the power and influence of God. He believes that the Atonement is not a vicarious sacrifice, but a moral influence, which Christ exerts over the hearts and lives of men. Finally, he argues that the future life is a state of retribution, in which men will be rewarded or punished according to their deeds .
In summary, Unitarian Christianity is a book that explains the principles and doctrines of Unitarianism. It is divided into two parts, the first of which explains the principles that Unitarians adopt in interpreting the Scriptures, while the second discusses some of the doctrines which the Scriptures, so interpreted, seem to Unitarians clearly to express. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about Unitarianism and its beliefs ..
