Since its first appearance in 2005, A History of Thailand has been hailed as a lively, readable and authoritative account of how the country developed over several centuries to become what it is today. In 2014, the Thai version became a surprise hit and was reprinted 13 times.
On this evening, the authors and expert commentators will mark the launch of a revised English-language edition with a new final chapter. This new edition now covers the tumultuous political events from 2005 to the youth protests of 2021. In addition to this, it also explores the less explicit changes in Thai society, economy and popular culture of recent decades.
The new edition also has over 200 other major additions based on new scholarship on the legacy from the Ayutthaya era, the reforms of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), and the royalist reaction against the revolution of 1932. The striking and unusual cover features a painting of Democracy Monument crafted from seafood.
Join the authors on this evening along with expert commentators:
Chris Baker, historian and author.
Pasuk Phongpaichit, emeritus professor, Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University.
Prajak Kongkirati, associate professor of Political Science at Thammasat University and author of the forthcoming: “Thailand: Polarization, Violence, and Democratic Regression” (CUP 2023).
James Wise, author of “Thailand: History, Politics and the Rule of Law” and former Australian ambassador to Thailand.
Moderator: Gwen Robinson, past president, FCCT.
NB: Copies of the new edition will be on sale at a special price.
