"The Ballad of Navajo Sam"-An original song by John Mascaro
(Written July 8, 1984, Recorded May 27, 1986) © 1986
From an unreleased demo CD "Love Slipping Away"
Based on a true character and story from Colorado in 1982, (arrested Oct. 12th that year). "Navajo Sam" was actually Leo Lyyjoki-51 at the time, a "former farmer and logger" living near Telluride, Colorado. It appears he is the same "Leo Lyyjoki" I recently researched on the I-net and learned that Leo aka "Navajo Sam" passed away in Tres Piedras, New Mexico on Oct. 10, 2010. "Leo was born on February 2, 1931 and passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2010." (He was 79.)
Note: there were a lot of colorful characters throughout American history that took the name ""Navajo Sam". There was no confirmed information then or now however that Leo Lyyjoki was a Native American Navajo Indian or had any connection with the Navajo Tribe.

Key of Dm
Lead Guitar Intro.
Lyrics:
1st Verse:
There was a man named "Navajo Sam" who lost his wife and lost his land
With his pride and his gun by his side, to the mountains he was running away
He was running away, he was running away yea, yea, yea
2nd Verse:
He hoped to find his own piece of mind in the San Juan National Forest
A voice kept calling within his soul: "Hey, do you know where you want to go"? "Where you want to go"?, "Where you want to go"? Oh, woe woe woe
Chorus
Navajo Sam, Navajo Sam, where's your wife? Where's your land? (Repeat)
(Repeat lead guitar intro.)
3rd Verse:
Before too long winter came, the coyotes howled, the snow was deep
To be a man one must take a stand, just don't be afraid of reality
Of reality, of reality yea, yea, yea
4th Verse:
He'd rob and steal just for a meal-a desperate man was he
Soon the law would get on the trail, all he wanted was to be free
To be free, to be free yea, yea, yea
(Repeat lead guitar intro.)
(Repeat Chorus 3 times)
(Lead guitar outro.)
5th Verse (Unrecorded):
He would turn himself into the law, you know they gave him a 2nd chance
To be a hard-working man, find a lady, a new romance
A new romance, a new romance yea, yea, yea
