The Countdown to Controversy

In the world of sports, no other moment rivals that of the mythical game 7. The moment when the two best teams of any league meet up in one final sudden-death match where the winner will be crowned that year's champion. It is a moment in which time stops and all eyes are on one point of the world as people wait in anticipation to see how the story will end. Whether it is in the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, or the NHL Stanley Cups. All fans can relate to it and it is a piece of history that everyone will remember.

In the motorsports world, this is no different. When a season-long championship fight comes down to the final race of the season, it feels like the world stops turning for that one day. There may have been 4 years before that where the championship was a runaway and probably will be 5 more before another one happens. But it makes you appreciate it more when you see a story reach its Hollywood finish. The 1992 NASCAR Cup Series Hooters 500, the 2015 IndyCar Series Championship finale, the 2021 Formula 1 championship in Abu Dhabi, and the 2005 NHRA Finals Funny Car championship are a few that can stick out in your mind. Sadly, however, the powers that be saw the light that glowed when it came to how other forms of sports decided their championship, and the publicity and dollar signs that came with it. And wanted their own piece of that Game 7 magic. Not heeding the warnings of the past and pushing forward regardless.
