In this viral geometry problem, I provided a detailed solution to the MIT admission question from 1869. It is impossible to solve the problem using the Pythagorean theorem but the answer to this hard geometry problem can be figured out by the property of similar triangles.

PROBLEM:
The perpendicular dropped from the vertex of the right angle upon the hypotenuse divides it into two segments of 9 and 16 feet respectively.
Find the lengths of the perpendicular and the two legs of the triangle.
