How to Maintain Your Blades (Swords, Knives, Etc)

What should you use for steel maintenance? Knowing how to prevent rust and other issues, particularly in long-term storage, will definitely save you some trouble. And if you do get dirt, discolorations or rust spots it's good to know how to remove those and get your sword or other blade nice and shiny.
