Affordable transparent overdrive shootout | Joyo vs Caline vs Nobels vs Danelectro | Which is best?

Описание к видео Affordable transparent overdrive shootout | Joyo vs Caline vs Nobels vs Danelectro | Which is best?

Today, we’re comparing five of the best super affordable transparent overdrive pedals in my collection: the Joyo King Of Kings, the Caline Pure Sky, the Nobels ODR-Midi, the Joyo Sweet Baby, and the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive V2!

And the Danelectro Cool Cat isn’t made any more – so you’ll have to find a used one 😊

We guitar players love transparent overdrives… or at least, the internet loves talking about them. I myself have two on every pedal board I make: the Greer Lightspeed and the Paul Cochrane Timmy.

But the five drives in today’s video are all much cheaper options, and in fact you can find them all for $50 or less if you’re lucky! The Kings Of Kings is a super versatile Analogman King Of Tone clone – or homage, if you prefer. The Caline Pure Sky and Danelectro Cool Cat are both versions of the iconic Timmy, while the Sweet baby is Joyo’s nod to the Mad Professor Sweet Honey overdrive. So you could say the Nobels is the only original pedal here, the ODR-Mini being a pedalboard-friendly take on the brand’s legendary ODR-1.

So, all these drives might be transparent… but they’re all also slightly different! And the best way to hear those differences is with a good old loop and a bit of knob turning and switch switching – so that’s exactly what’s about to happen.

Here, I run the five pedals through an indie rock loop played on the bridge single coil pickup of my Fender Telecaster. The pedals are running into my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic on the clean channel, with no reverb. Which one do you think sounds best?

My setup was as follows: I ran the five pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loop. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
