Ashok Leyland’s Light bullet proof vehicles for Indian air force | LBPV 4X4

Introduction:

A light bullet proof vehicle is a protected medium for the transportation of the infantry troops. These vehicles play a special role during counter terrorist operations. On April 2021, Ashok Leland had supplied first batch of light bullet proof vehicles to Indian air force. But why Indian air force needed light bullet proof vehicles. What are the capabilities of newly inducted Ashok Leyland’s Light bullet proof vehicles? In today’s video we will be discussing in details about the Ashok Leyland’s LBPV, So let’s get started.

Why IAF needs LBPV?

On January 2nd, 2016 at the Pathankot Air Force Base, four terrorists breached the Indian air force western air command killing 7 security personnel. The aim of the attack was to destroy MIG 21 fighters and MI 35 attack helicopters. However, they failed to do so. The Pathankot air airport is spread over an area of approximately 75 acres. At that point of time Indian air force used Maruti Gypsy to transport Garuda commandos, which was not a safe choice. The Maruti gypsy is open and has no protection from side and terrorists can easily open fire at the vehicle from long distance. During Pathankot anti-terror operations Indian air force realized the importance of light bullet proof vehicles to counter such situations which can withstand heavy bullet attacks.

Ashok Leyland’s LBPV Introduction:

Ashok Leyland’s light bulletproof vehicles are adopted version of Lockheed Martin’s Common Vehicle Next Generation (CVNG). These vehicles have been developed under TOT from Lockheed Martin to Ashok Leyland and are completely indigenized and developed in India. L.B.P.V is 4 by 4 wheel drive and build to operate in tough terrains under adverse weather conditions. These vehicles can easy transport troops near terror hide out due to its high degree of protection from bullets. The vehicle has high off-road mobility in mud, sand, rocks, and shallow water.

Specifications:

The vehicle has been provided protection by equipping with 6 mm thick armoured protection at doors and a 40 mm windshield glass, which can withstand AK-47 and sniper rifle bullets. Its manufacturer Ashok Leyland even claims that LBPV offers superior protection from both ballistic and blast threats. The roof supported seating arrangement provides better travelling experience for the troops travelling through rough terrain. A canopy covered or protected by armour has also been provided which can allow the gunner to fire freely at its target. Whereas it has a provision for 360 Degrees rotatable gunner’s station with view port & gun mount, along with provision for weapon station.

L.B.P.V is fitted with H series 6-cylinder engines. The vehicle has been designed and developed in a way that its engine remains hidden from the front and rear side and cannot be targeted easily. The H6 engines can drive vehicle at speed of 100 to 120 km and can also be run on flat tyres. It has 6 speeds Gear Box, 2 speeds Auxiliary Gear Box, Independent Suspended axles, Hydraulic brake system that provides for excellent mobility and maneuverability with all four sides protected for STANAG Level armoured cab as per customer requirement. The vehicles can accommodate six fully geared Garud commandos or Quick Reaction Team members while the open space in the rear can have more men. It can carry total payload of 1000kg.
