In the Texas Political Roundup: Lawmakers will be spending the weekend in the capitol hearing bills on many of the topics on Gov. Abbott’s special session agenda.That’s true at least for senators.

Pizza and pop fueled the state Senate in the wee hours of Thursday, with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick serving up slices – donning an apron and all.
Lawmakers in that chamber voted out the only bills they have to pass in the special session – two measures to keep some key state agencies operating.
That triggered Abbott to open up consideration of the 19 remaining items on his agenda.
The only surprise came in education – with Abbott adding retired teacher benefits and expanding the call to more than simply study school finance.

Leaders of the National Episcopal Church have come out against the bill to restrict bathroom use in schools and public buildings for transgender Texans.
In a letter to House Speaker Joe Straus this week, the church said passage of a “bathroom bill” could keep it from holding its general convention in Austin next year.
The church cited the discrimination transgender people already face and called on Straus – a staunch opponent of the bill – to remain “steadfast.”

The State of Texas is headed back to court – this time over an abortion law set to take effect in September that would ban the most common second-trimester form of the procedure.
The Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood said they’re suing over a part of Senate Bill 8 that bars doctors from using surgical instruments to remove fetal tissue.
This latest lawsuit is the third time in less than a year the state has had to defend its abortion policies in federal court.
