Audi Q2 Review: A Quirky Crossover That's More Show Than Go

The Audi Q2 has an undeniably unique look in the German brand's lineup, blending crossover cues with Audi's typical styling language. First arriving in 2016 with a light refresh in 2020, the Q2 stands out with chunky proportions, bold color options, and angular styling details. However, beneath that polarizing exterior design is a vehicle that fails to back up its sporty looks with driving dynamics.

The powertrain lineup tells you everything you need to know about the Q2's on-road performance. Entry-level versions utilize a pint-sized 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine delivering just 108 horsepower, taking a leisurely 11.2 seconds to hit 60 mph. Stepping up to the 1.5-liter turbo-four cranks out 148 hp, cutting the 0-60 time to 8.6 seconds – still far from quick. The entire Q2 range returns mediocre fuel economy in the mid-40s mpg.

While not a performance powerhouse, the Q2 does offer a relatively premium interior for its price point with quality materials and an intuitive control layout. However, at just 172 inches long it's hardly as spacious as the crossover styling suggests, feeling more like a high-riding Audi A3 hatchback rather than a true SUV.

The Q2 handles tidily enough, but rides overly firm, especially with larger wheel options. Despite its tall seating position, there's minimal confidence inspiring agility or composure from the chassis. It's an Audi created for style over substance.

Perhaps the Q2's boldest attribute is its value equation. Priced from around $35,000, the Q2 offers few advantages over the A3 line yet carries a higher base cost. You're primarily paying for the crossover looks. If that unique aesthetic appeals to you and driving dynamics are low on the priority list, the Q2 could make sense. Otherwise, the A3 likely makes for a smarter buy that prioritizes the premium experience Audi is known for. With Audi discontinuing the Q2 and choosing not to replace it, this curious crossover's days appear to be numbered.
