Clinical psychologist Catherine Steiner-Adair has spent years studying the effects of digital technology on our families. In a culture where kids have the option to text—and half of them say they prefer it to talking—what is being lost? Quite a bit, according to Steiner-Adair, author of the book The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age.

When technology is misused, it can affect children’s development, explains Steiner-Adair. “Kids who use technology not for educational reasons but for recreational reasons, they’re not as good at calming themselves down,” she says.
