Improvisation: Day 185, 2024 (Piano Diaries)

Recently I have been studying music history more and more and I am always fascinated by the subject of harmony (harmony theory). What is it anyway? Why does it have such a power to create a mood for me? Here I am just trying a ‘Galant Schema’ called ‘Stepwise Romanesca’, which is based on a particular figured bass/partimento (circa 16/17th century). At the end of each cycle there is a simple (compound) cadence. Through this minimalist and, for me, emotional improvisation, I can internalise these sequences and harmonies much better. I also believe that there is a lot of mood in this scheme. No wonder it appears (and in many variations) in countless compositions. 🙏 Sebastian
