(20 Apr 2020) Traditional festive Easter services were held in churches throughout Russia on the night of April 18-19 despite calls by the authorities for a regime of self-isolation and bans on public events to tackle the spread of the new coronavirus.
Most churches in Russia were closed to the public, including Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral, where the leader of the world's largest Orthodox denomination, Patriarch Kirill, conducted the nighttime service in the presence only of other clerics, a choir and some church workers.
But in some other regions, including Yekaterinburg, churches keep operating as normal.
Easter liturgies were broadcast live on several local television channels but many locals preferred to attend the services in person despite warnings about the virus. People were being offered hand sanitizers and masks upon entrance to the churches.
"We have a soul that also needs to be fed," said Nikolay Maleta, an Abbot at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Yekaterinburg.
"They haven't closed food stores, they haven't closed health, medical institutions, and thank God that churches are still open so that people can come during the day and get comfort in prayer asking God for help in overcoming this trouble."
Church goers said they weren't afraid and that precautions were in place to keep them safe.
