is a type of specific training geared towards specific sports. It helps to improve those athletes skills by not only mimicking sports specific movements in the weight room, but it also builds an improved base level of conditioning & overall aerobic endurance.
Another added benefit of GPP training is that it can help improve recovery after a tough workout by improved blood flow to the muscles, helping to reduce inflammation & accumulation of lactic acid. It improves your overall endurance & work capacity, which is useful in sports like football, soccer, MMA, cycling, etc.
Even in sports like weightlifting, where work durations are very short and rest between sets is much longer, GPP still has its place. We're not always training in the lower rep ranges as powerlifters; hypertrophy work is needed as well.
It is important to not that GPP itself should not be used as a fat loss tool. Yes, this improved cardiovascular endurance & burns Calories, but the main objective is to prepare yourself for your sport better both mentally & physically.
It is also important to note that GPP should be placed in your program strategically. Do NOT implement this training too close to a competition or big sporting event. It should be used primarily in the offseason to improve base level of conditioning, along with hypertrophy work. By utilizing all the different energy systems in our bodies, we will be more well rounded, stronger, & more durable athletes.
