1.Yes, definitely. You can use any algorithm that you feel like for detection. At last, it is a classification problem at the end.
2.No, the paper suggests, 24*24 image. That many pixels will be tough to explain, so I have used 10*10 image.
3. Yes. Actually, later you will discover that what we care about is the delta and the rest, magnitude, sign and so will be tuned as the model will also learn other parameters to make everything work. This is also the beauty of machine learning, Deep Learning in general, things work out even when it seems that it should not work.
